- Affordability mode: Enter your annual income and choose a rent guideline. The classic 30% rule says rent should be no more than 30% of gross monthly income.
- Split Rent mode: Enter the total rent, add all roommates, and choose a split method — equal, by income, or by room size.
- The 50/30/20 rule allocates 50% to needs (including rent), 30% to wants, 20% to savings.
Formule
30% Rule: Max Rent = Gross Monthly Income × 0.30
50/30/20: Max Rent = (Gross Monthly × 0.50) − Other Needs
Income Split: Share = (Person Income / Total Income) × Total Rent
Room Split: Share = (Room sqft / Total sqft) × Total Rent
50/30/20: Max Rent = (Gross Monthly × 0.50) − Other Needs
Income Split: Share = (Person Income / Total Income) × Total Rent
Room Split: Share = (Room sqft / Total sqft) × Total Rent
Financial experts recommend spending no more than 30% of gross income on rent. The 50/30/20 budget rule is another popular approach. When splitting rent with roommates, using income-based splits is often considered fairer than equal splits. Learn more at CFPB's guide.
