Fórmula
= Σ(Credit × Grade Points) ÷ Σ Credits = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10 = SGPA × 0.4 = Average of all semester SGPAs Note: Conversion formulas (SGPA→Percentage, SGPA→GPA) vary by institution. The formulas above follow the UGC/AICTE (India) recommended standard. Check your university's official grading policy for exact conversions.
What Is SGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is a weighted average of the grade points earned across all subjects in a single semester. It reflects your academic performance for that term and forms the building block of your overall CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average), which averages your SGPAs across all completed semesters.
Most universities in India, the US, and internationally use a credit-hour weighted system so that subjects carrying more credits have a proportionally greater impact on your average. A comprehensive overview of grading systems worldwide is available on the Wikipedia article on Grading in Education.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is SGPA calculated?
SGPA = Σ (Credit Hours × Grade Points) ÷ Σ Credit Hours.
Example: If you score 9 in a 4-credit subject and 7 in a 3-credit subject:
SGPA = (4×9 + 3×7) ÷ (4+3) = (36+21) ÷ 7 = 57 ÷ 7 = 8.14
How do I convert SGPA to percentage?
The most widely used formula (UGC/AICTE India) is:
Percentage = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10
So an SGPA of 8.5 → (8.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.5%
Note: Some universities use their own multiplier (e.g., VTU uses CGPA × 10 − 0.75). Always verify with your institution.
How do I convert SGPA to GPA on a 4.0 scale?
A commonly used approximation is: GPA (4.0) = SGPA × 0.4
So SGPA 8.0 → 8.0 × 0.4 = 3.2 / 4.0
For WES (World Education Services) or official international transcript evaluation, always request an official conversion from your registrar.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA measures your performance in a single semester. CGPA is the average of all your SGPAs across all semesters in your programme. CGPA = (SGPA₁ + SGPA₂ + … + SGPAₙ) ÷ n, where n is the number of completed semesters.
Is an SGPA of 7.5 good?
On a 10-point scale, 7.5 SGPA is generally considered good — equivalent to approximately 67.5% and a GPA of ~3.0/4.0 (B grade). Many competitive job placements and postgraduate admissions require a minimum CGPA of 6.5–7.5, making 7.5 a competitive threshold for most programmes.
Can I calculate SGPA without credits (equal weightage)?
If all subjects carry equal credit hours, the SGPA simplifies to a simple arithmetic mean of all grade points. Enter the same credit value (e.g., 1) for each subject and the result will be an equal-weighted average.
How do I improve my SGPA next semester?
Focus on high-credit subjects first — improving grade points in a 4-credit course has more than double the impact of a 1-credit elective. Use this calculator to model scenarios: enter target grade points per subject to see what SGPA you need to achieve your goal CGPA.
